Star Wars: Maul — Shadow Lord is the most confident animated series Lucasfilm has put out in years. Sam Witwer, reprising the role he has voiced since The Clone Wars, finally gets the standalone Maul story fans have asked for since 2014, set after the Clone Wars but before Rebels, with the ex-Sith trying to build a criminal empire on a planet the Empire has never touched. Here is our week-four assessment, the full release schedule, and where it fits into the broader Star Wars universe.

What the Show Is About
After the collapse of the Shadow Collective and his humiliation at Malachor, Maul retreats to a remote Outer Rim planet called Janix, a world almost untouched by the Empire's gaze. He is trying, slowly and methodically, to rebuild a criminal syndicate beyond Palpatine's reach, while hunting for an apprentice who can help him take his revenge. That apprentice turns out to be Devon Izara, a disillusioned young Jedi Padawan voiced by Gideon Adlon, whose arc carries much of the season's emotional weight.
Alongside Maul's rise is a parallel detective storyline: Wagner Moura voices Brander Lawson, a world-weary Janixian cop investigating the string of disappearances Maul's rise is creating, partnered with his droid companion "Two-Boots" (a scene-stealing Richard Ayoade). The show's genius is that these two storylines feel like two completely different genres — Sith opera and noir detective procedural — that collide magnificently in Episode 6.

- Several surprise Clone Wars-era returns in later episodes, per Disney's teaser material
What Works
The Animation
Shadow Lord is the best-looking Star Wars animated series to date. The action scenes use what the production team calls "weight animation," with deliberate hitches and stutters that make lightsaber clashes feel physical in a way Clone Wars never quite managed.
The Tone
This is the most adult-feeling Star Wars animation Lucasfilm has ever produced. It is not gratuitous, but it treats violence, moral consequence, and political corruption with genuine weight. If Andor is live-action adult Star Wars, Shadow Lord is animated adult Star Wars.
The Character Writing
The show understands that Maul is a tragic figure, not a villain. His rage is a function of grief. The series leans into that interpretation without ever making him a misunderstood victim. The balance is delicate and the show nails it.
What Might Bother Some Viewers
Pacing is slow. The first four episodes spend significant time establishing Janix, its political ecosystem, and its unique flora and fauna. If you came for lightsaber fights every 10 minutes, you will have to wait until Episode 5. The payoff is worth it, but impatient viewers have complained.
The detective storyline is also genre whiplash for anyone who came expecting pure Sith content. It has grown on most reviewers as the show has progressed, but Episode 2 in particular had some fans saying "just give me Maul."
Canon and Continuity
Shadow Lord is set between Star Wars: The Clone Wars Season 7 (Maul's capture on Mandalore) and Star Wars Rebels Season 2 (his return). It fills in a gap longtime fans have speculated about for over a decade. The show's events are fully canonical and have already been referenced in the Star Wars: Ahsoka promotional material for its upcoming second season.
If you want the full "Maul saga" before Shadow Lord, the recommended viewing order is: The Phantom Menace → Clone Wars "Darkness on Umbara" arc → Clone Wars Season 5 "Shades of Reason" → Clone Wars Season 7 Finale → Solo: A Star Wars Story (cameo) → Rebels "Twin Suns." Shadow Lord slots between Clone Wars Season 7 and Rebels.
Ratings Context
A 91 percent Rotten Tomatoes score is on par with Andor Season 1 and The Mandalorian Season 1. It is significantly higher than Ahsoka, The Acolyte, and Skeleton Crew. Among Disney+ Star Wars animation specifically, only Star Wars: Visions has consistently scored higher across seasons.
Episode 4's IMDb rating ("The Debt") is sitting at 9.1, the highest single-episode score for a Star Wars animated show since the Clone Wars series finale.
Should You Watch?
Start watching if you have enjoyed any prior Maul-centric Star Wars content, you like prestige animation, or you want a show that respects your time and attention.
Wait for the full drop on May 4 if you prefer binge-watching, or if you are not deep enough into Star Wars lore for weekly cliffhangers to feel rewarding.
