The Wild Robot is the easy answer in 2026. Chris Sanders (Lilo & Stitch, How to Train Your Dragon) directs an adaptation of Peter Brown's book about a robot learning to survive on a wild island. The animation has a painterly quality that belongs in the pantheon next to Studio Ghibli at its best. It made kids and adults cry in equal measure in theaters and plays even better at home.

The Mitchells vs. the Machines is the funniest family movie on Netflix, full stop. A dysfunctional road-trip family accidentally saves humanity from an AI uprising. Sony Pictures Animation working with Phil Lord and Chris Miller means the visual gags never stop. 97 percent on Rotten Tomatoes and deserved.

Klaus, Sergio Pablos's original Netflix animated film from 2019, remains the best holiday movie the service has produced. Its hand-drawn-with-3D-lighting look was genuinely innovative.

KPop Demon Hunters is the animated breakout of the past year. Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans direct a story about a K-pop girl group who secretly hunt demons between concerts. Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio is the Oscar winner for Best Animated Feature in 2022. Stop-motion, dark, emotionally raw, and frequently beautiful. Not for very young children.
